Water ranks among the most fundamental resources for which cities and municipalities are responsible. To distribute water effectively, cities often rely on networks of water mains. A water main is a pipe from which many different properties can access clean, potable water.

Sometimes, water mains rupture or become blocked, resulting in flooding or the interruption of water access. During the winter, the risk of water-main breakage increases in the face of alternating temperatures, which cause pipes to swell and to contract, ultimately weakening water mains. Other risk factors that lead to water main damage include exposure to corrosive materials and shifts in the ground.

In the event a water main does break, some cities have emergency numbers people can call to alert authorities, who can then put into motion emergency repair procedures.
